Dear Friends,
It has to be short one today. I am still grading papers, believe it or not, and now my GMC Yukon has decided to have a “Charging System Failure,” leaving my family down to one vehicle (I already have another car down for the count, not having had the time to fix it yet). So I’ve got to go buy a new alternator and install it, pronto. Well, after I do a bit more research to make sure that’s my problem.
So no lengthy essay today. But I will share some things that have caught my attention this week.
The Wuhan “lab leak” theory is now mainstream, as it is clearly the most likely scenario for the origins of Covid-19. This has put Anthony Fauci in a rather uncomfortable situation. I highly, highly recommend you read Michael Brendan Dougherty’s profile of Dr. Fauci and the situation he in which he finds himself.
Last November I wrote a post, “COVID From My Armchair.” You might recall that I argued that our entire Covid plan was entirely backward. Hospitals have “isolation units” to protect the immunocompromised; they do not try to make the entire hospital an isolation unit. We tried to make our entire society an isolation unit, when the obvious thing to do was lockdown the most vulnerable members of our society and let the less-vulnerable carry on in ways in which they were most comfortable. Guess what? Dr. Fauci got this exact advice from a University of Pennsylvania researcher in March, 2020. He completely ignored it. Read the letter yourself:
That’s pretty remarkable.
In other news, the Southern Baptist Convention is in upheaval after Russell Moore’s departure from the Ethics & Religious Liberty Center. Particularly, a 4,000 word letter Moore wrote to the Board of Trustees was leaked to the press, and it is riveting. As much as the media wanted to make the intramural conflict in the SBC about Donald Trump, Moore maintains that it is something else entirely. It’s about sexual abuse and racism. Read the whole thing here. Pray for the Baptists.
Remember when I was hawking Thaddeus Williams’s wonderful book, Confronting Injustice Without Compromising Truth? Well, here is a superb 30-minute video where he answers frequently-asked questions. Well worth your time.
Here’s something amazing. A hymn written by a Temperance advocate that embraces the exact opposite of the Apostle Paul’s teaching in Colossians 2!
I don’t think this will go over well in a Presbyterian or Anglican church, so I won’t be busting it out any time soon.
That’s it for this week—off to cure the “Charging System Failure.” I’ll leave you with one of the most thrilling ends to a concert I’ve ever attended. When Edge and Adam switched instruments and U2 closed it out singing Psalm 40. It was mesmerizing:
temperance hymn >> jaw >> floor.
